General Manager Greg Findlay, who leads the one-of-a-kind resort Six Senses Ninh Van Bay (SSNVB), is proving that luxury and sustainability can harmoniously coexist. With innovative ideas and a forward-looking vision, he and his team are continuously working to make SSNVB one of the world’s leading sustainable destinations.
Greetings and congratulations on your new appointment as the new General Manager at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay! From what you have experienced in your career as a hotelier, what is your thought on sustainable traveling trends in Vietnam as well as in the world nowadays?
Sustainability is not a trend but rather a mindset. Today, it is no longer an optional extra for travelers, it has become an expectation of travelers, and especially discerning our guests in the luxury market.
With the world now experiencing constant climate change, we can see the increasing impact, with major natural disasters more common around the world and even here in Vietnam in recent years. This has affected tourism in general and therefore created the urgent demand for net-zero emission, a shift for all organizations and businesses. In hospitality we are fortunate to have the power to create lasting positive change. Globally, the hospitality industry is increasingly focusing on resource efficiency, biodiversity restoration, and community partnerships. Addressing these issues requires collective action across our industry.
In Vietnam, the potential for sustainable tourism is immense, especially with our country's rich biodiversity. For example, at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, we are fortunate to be home to endangered species, such as the black-shanked douc langur and the silver-backed chevrotain and have a unique turmeric flower named after our resort. By addressing the negative impact, we have on the world - our footprints - and enhancing our positive contributions - our handprints - we can work towards achieving a Net Positive Hospitality Pathway.
As you can see from the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, which represents over 7 million rooms globally and includes 32 world-leading hotel companies with a reach of over 55,000 properties, IHG, with the Six Senses brand, is also a member. This shows that the hospitality industry is increasingly moving toward sustainability, and many hotels and resorts in Vietnam are on this journey to becoming more sustainable.
Most people associate luxury with modernity and squandering. So how would you and your team reconcile luxury with sustainability and environmental commitment at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay?
Luxury doesn’t have to come with modernity and squandering. At Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, luxury is about offering exceptional experiences, emotional hospitality, pioneering wellness, and a sense of fun and care - qualities that are rare to find elsewhere. Since opening our first property in 1995, Six Senses has defined itself as an eco-pioneer in the hospitality industry.
Sustainability, for us, goes beyond environmental protection. It’s the balance of the 3Ps: Profit, People, and Planet. Through sustainability, we ensure the profitability of our business, provide livelihoods for our hosts, and support the local community (the 2nd P). Our resort relies heavily on the natural beauty of the beach, coral reefs, mountains, water, soil, and island climate - everything that Mother Nature provides. Protecting the environment is therefore crucial, as the 3rdP - Planet -directly contributes to SSNVB’s unique selling points.
To ensure that sustainability is integrated into every aspect of our operations, we established a dedicated Sustainability department, not under HR or Marketing, but working directly with the General Manager to make sure the resort operation is sustainable and local community and nature conservation is focused on. Sustainability is a collective effort, not the responsibility of a single team. At Six Senses, we have a comprehensive set of guidelines that detail what to do and what not to do, and these guidelines are applied consistently across all SS properties worldwide.
Regarding environmental conservation, we have collaborated with GreenViet to establish a pioneering model with a resident biologist dedicated to professional conservation efforts. We’re proud that Six Senses Ninh Van Bay’s efforts over the past 20 years have been recognized with the HICAP Award 2024 for Sustainable Hotel Worldwide in the categories of Climate and Biodiversity Action!
How do you encourage guests and local community to be part of it? And are there any challenges for the resort to improvise for different types of travelers who visit Ninh Van Bay, as some might and might not understand the importance of what the resort has been doing.
At Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, we encourage guests to adopt sustainable practices before and during their stay. Our reservation team provides a packing list with eco-friendly suggestions, such as avoiding plastic bags and using reef-friendly sunscreen. During their stay, guests can participate in sustainable activities like biodiversity hikes, Earth Lab workshops, and cooking classes in the garden. Kids can enjoy sustainability-focused workshops in Vooc Village, and all food comes from our organic garden or local sources.
Our Sustainability Fund contributes 0.5% of revenue to support local community initiatives. So, every guest, when choosing SSNVB, they are a part of solution, supporting us in community development and environment conservation programs. We prioritize local sourcing food within 83 km of the resort. We make the food audit yearly, and 83% of our food coming from local suppliers in 2023. We also reduce plastic packaging and try to item purchase items in big amounts like 5kg to 30 kg. Our purchasing team works to reduce plastic packaging by inviting suppliers to join our take-back program and purchase in bulk to minimize waste and unnecessary packaging.
Our hosts (staff) receive mandatory sustainability training such as plastic free, climate change and waste management. With 80% of our hosts from the local community, training to our hosts means training to the community members.
When conducting community events, we ensure local involvement. For example, we organize beach clean-ups with the residents of Ninh Van and Vinh Luong. When setting up solar lights, the local community in Son Thai shares the manpower and construction materials. There is proactive community leader - Ms. Nga, the Chairwoman of the Fatherland Front of Vinh Luong Commune, who actively collaborates with us on waste management projects. At Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, we do sustainability via empowering community capabilities, rather than charity, striving to create opportunities that benefit both the environment and the local community.
This year we are proud to launch our very new green initiative named Sustainable Hospitality Fellowship 2024 (SHF); in which we are empowering young innovators to drive sustainability in the tourism industry. The fellowship program is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the luxury hospitality industry, including operations, guest services, sustainability practices, and wellness initiatives. Fellows are paired with experienced mentors who guide them through their learning journey and help them develop their skills and knowledge.
The resort is well-known for its unique biophilic design, how does it contribute to the wellbeing of the guests?
At Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, our biophilic design is deeply integrated into the natural environment, enhancing the wellbeing of our guests by creating a strong connection between them and nature. The resort's layout, materials, and architectural features are inspired by the surrounding landscape, with open spaces that invite natural light, air, and stunning views of the beach, mountains, and coral reefs. This connection to nature promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and fosters a sense of tranquility.
Biophilic design has been shown to improve mental and physical health by stimulating the senses, encouraging mindfulness, and creating a more balanced and harmonious environment. The use of natural materials, such as wood, stone, and bamboo, alongside green spaces and water features, ensures a calming and restorative atmosphere that supports both relaxation and energy renewal. This design approach not only elevates the guest experience but also aligns with our commitment to sustainability, as it fosters environmental responsibility while enhancing personal wellbeing.
Dining scene in hotels & resorts in the city is normally more vibrant and diverse. What is your strategy regarding culinary offerings in the resort for your guests? Is there a big difference when it comes to demand and expectation of the local guests and the international guests?
At our resort we offer a wide choice of dining options with 2 consistent offerings of Dining by the Bay, which offers daily buffet breakfast, and À la carte favorites, local and international.
In the evening Dining by the Bay focuses on Vietnamese cuisine, which is very popular with our local and international guests. Dining by the pool offers Mediterranean style cuisine for lunch and dinner, you must try our Pho Beef Pizza… It's amazing! To provide more choice to our guests, we offer Dining by the Rock twice a week with fresh Lobster (sourced fresh from our local fishermen) and Wagyu Beef as our signature dish served to guests at our inspiring elevated rock restaurant overlooking Ninh Van Bay. There are also more destination dining options with Grandma's Kitchen presenting local Vietnamese family style dishes served under a thatched salad in our farmers market gardens. There also our famous Seafood Hot Pot served at the Jetty based upon weather and our Farmhouse Kitchen doing a private Chefs Table. Finally, our In Villa BBQ’s and In Villa Dining is always available upon request.
Any special projects coming up next year that guests should be excited about?
We are very focused on Wellness as one of our core pillars at Six Senses and 2025 we will launch our Women’s Health program and a focus on hormonal changes and a program designed to support women through this process working with internationally respected experts.
Paddle Tennis and Pickle Ball are 2 of the fastest growing sports in the world and we will look to add our own Pickle ball court at the resort in 2025.
Now let’s get to know a little bit more about yourself! How did you decide to relocate to Vietnam and join the team here at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay?
